Step back in time and remember the magical feeling of opening a picture book like the Very Hungry Caterpillar or even Good Night Moon. The sensation of entering a very safe place to explore at one’s own personal pace brings pleasure and comfort, and when artfully composed, invites another visit … and another. Felicia Chao applies her trusty gel pens and Copic markers to create scenes that soothe and satisfy, dispensing solace and empathy so welcome in times when kindness and warmth seem in short supply.
Spoke Art is especially happy to present the San Francisco based Chao’s solo exhibition I Just Want to Go Home, a collection of gracefully colorful scenes that inspire meditation and happy exploration. Familiar repetitions of wooden floorboards, square tiles and flowerbeds restore order. The open sky of Greenhouse offers airy freedom, while the apricot morning and pastel blue night of Day & Night, bisected by a cozy round ruf, convey order and stability. Benign blobby, rounded creatures curl up in comfort together.
In addition to the works on paper, Feicia Chiao’s first publication, Sketchbook6!, will be available for viewing and pre-order. The 63-full color drawings are accompanied by the artist’s notes, making for a thoughtful and intimate experience. Spoke Art invites you to the opening on September 4th from 11:00am to 6:00pm. Remember to bring your mask and proof of vaccination and don’t be surprised if you get a hankering for a cup of hot chocolate.
I Just Want to Go Home shows through September 25, 2021, at Spoke Art at 816 Sutter Street, San Francisco, California 94109.
