The American tradition in painting, and specifically painting nature, has always originated for me in the mid-19th century movement of the Hudson River School. When I go to a museum and see a work by Cole, Barstow or Church, I immediately think, “Boom! American paintings starts here.” And then, oddly, I don’t think of another era of American landscape paintings that had that impact. Diebenkorn comes to mind, and of course O’Keeffe, and a bit of research of the works of Robert Duncanson and even some Andrew Wyeth is refreshing.
