Los Angeles’s Department of Cultural Affairs has revealed that the 2019 edition of its Current:LA Triennial will focus on the city’s relationship to food. The exhibition will be organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles’s curatorial team, with executive director Elsa Longhauser, curator Jamillah James, and director of learning and engagement Asuka Hisa acting as main representatives. They will work on the triennial, which places public artworks around the L.A., with a committee that includes Public Fiction founder Lauren Mackler, curator Diana Nawi (who is also set to co-organize Prospect.5 in New Orleans), and Luckman Gallery curator Marco Rios.

Set to open in fall 2019, the food-focused exhibition will feature some 15 temporary public artworks and projects to address such topics as agriculture and food diversity. The 2019 edition is the second for a triennial launched in 2016 with a festival about water in Los Angeles.

In a statement, Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti said, “Los Angeles is a global cultural capital—a place where the world comes to showcase creative excellence and artistic diversity. The latest iteration of Current:LA builds on this tradition and makes art accessible by bringing world-class exhibits to the public spaces that touch the lives of all Angelenos.”
